Taxonomy

The holotype of Pyralausta bivialis Hampson, 1913: 335, from Sarawak is in the BMNH.

It is the TS of Pyralausta Hampson, 1913: 334 which was tentatively placed in the Spilomelinae in the LepIndex and in the Pyraustinae in Globiz.

On the LepIndex card for the genus Pyralausta Shaffer notes ‘possibly Syncrotaulella’ [sic] - did he mean Syncrotaula (a junior subjective syn. of Hoploscopa Meyrick 1886: 267 (Nuss, 1998))?

The sp. is somewhat aberrant for a spilomeline having specialised long, porrect palps. Here it is temporarily placed with and should probably be formally transferred to the Hoploscopinae and the genus Hoploscopa Meyrick, 1886: 267-268

  • = Eudorina Snellen 1895: 116 syn. n. (Nuss 1998: 500-5001)
as suggested by Théo Léger (pers. com. 2019).

Description

A dark brown sp. with darker marginal lines. Two almost straight white lines cross the FW in the postmedian and submedian positions. In a few specimens the outer line curves inwards to a greater extent than in the holotype [illustrated]. The HW is a uniform pale brownish grey except for a paler, curved, submedian band. Compare with Pyralausta? sp. 1 and Syncrotaula sp. 1 (RTS, 1994 :170, pl. 28, fig. 19). Two or three similar spp. occur in New Guinea.
